Teotihuacan Archaeological Site

Teotihuacan, "place where men become gods when die". A name with exotic resonance that is full of promises.

Built during the first century by teotihuacans, the great pyramids formed part of a ceremonial center within a city that is believed to have had a population of 250,000 during its zenith in the third and fourth centuries. By the seventh century, the vast city had been pillaged and abandoned. It was then discovered by the Aztecs, who believed it to be the site where the gods had convened to ensure the survival of the Earth. They named it Teotihuacan (City of the Gods) and its massive pyramids the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon.

All religious monuments distributed along the majestic Calzada de los Muertos are set out according to the sun’s course. Aztec priests were part of intellectual elite who held the arts in high regard. The mural paintings that decorate the walls of the ancient ruins depict their gods of worship, traders, and distant foreigners who visited the area.
